How To Choose a Website Designer—The 2 Kinds of Website Designers

Choosing a website designer can be a nerve wracking process.  Your business is your baby and your website is a huge part of the appearance of your business.

Design is art.

Website design is an artistic medium.  When you select a designer, consider that this is a way for them to be creative.  They may have the tech skills, but they also have the creativity to take your site the extra mile.  Utilize and trust their creativity to bring something new to the table; something that you haven’t considered before.

There are two kinds of website designers.
The style kind and the client kind.  Both are important.

The style kind is the kind of designer that has a distinct style.  You notice their work and perhaps they’ve built a name for themselves.  This type of design feels very artistic to me because it’s like seeing a painting and knowing who the artist is.  The style kind of designer leans into the art side of website design.

The client kind is a versatile, client facing designer.  They bring their expertise to the table, but ultimately they are there to serve the client.  Their style may come through at times, but in general they are regarded as listening and projecting the client’s vision.

When it comes time to choose a website designer, I want you to think about what you want.  Do you know what you want?  Do you have a specific vision in mind?  Or do you have some idea but you’re not quite sure what it might look like?

If you are someone who is looking for someone to guide them, find the style kind of designer.  Find someone who’s style resonates with you, and go from there.  This way you rely on their artistic ability to fill in the gaps of your brand/what you want.

If you are someone who knows what you want, find the client kind of designer.  Find a designer who has a versatile portfolio.  Someone who has websites that all look different.  Find someone who listens to your vision and gets it.  Because you will benefit more from someone who wants to portray your vision rather than their own style.

When it comes to website design, I am definitely the client kind of designer. My websites are client first. And I like it that way. I’m a know-what-I-want kind of gal and I attract those types of clients too. My clients have unique brands and they want to make what’s on paper into a digital reality. That’s where I come in. I’ve been told that listening to clients is my “sh*t”. It’s what I do. So if you’re looking for a specific style, I’m not your gal. However, if you know what you like (and what you don’t like), consider applying for a custom site. If we are a match, I promise to listen to your dreams and turn them into a cyber-reality.
